Burna Boy, a Nigerian Afrobeat singer, has been named the biggest artiste in Africa by the Recording Academy, the organisers of the Grammy Awards.
The 2024 Grammy Awards put Burna Boy up for four awards.
In their congratulations to the singer, The Grammys said, “There is not a bigger star in Afrobeats or even in all of Africa than Burna Boy.”
The self-proclaimed “African Giant” has been nominated for two GRAMMYs in a row for Best Global Album for his records Twice as Tall and African Giant. He has also worked with big names like Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber.
Back in Ghana, music fans and fans of award-winning dancehall singer Stonebwoy were excited and looking forward to the announcement of the nominees, but they were let down when the list was released on Friday by the Recording Academy.
Stonebwoy didn’t get a highly sought-after nomination for the Grammy Awards for his most recent record, “5th Dimension.”
There were high hopes and good expectations that Stonebwoy would be nominated for a historic Grammy this year, but it looks like the dream will have to wait for now.
But there are some well-known names on the list from the African music scene. Nigerian stars Davido, Asake, Arya Starr, and Olamide are mentioned, as well as South African star Tyla, whose song “Water” went viral and got her a lot of attention.
